Summer Wardrobe Essentials

With the temperature soaring with each passing day, it is time to finally put away all things winter attire and bring out the summer essentials. Time to bid adieu to chunky layers and make way for soft, free-flowing pieces; replace bejewelled heavy necklaces with light, delicate ones and swap poly and wool blends with cotton, linen and organic based fabrics.

While most of these pieces are already a part of our everyday wardrobe, it is time to put them to good use beat the heat in style!
The summer wardrobe essentials list has been prepared keeping in mind the hot and humid weather experienced across India.

1. White Top:
Be it long or short, a traditional tunic or a classic white shirt, no summer wardrobe is complete without a white top.
Ideal to beat the head and easy to style, a white top is an absolute must-have.

2. Cotton Pants: Whether you like them printed or plain, in bold shades or delicate pastels, fitted or flared, cotton fabric pants are a perfect summer alternative to the poly-blend trousers and leggings.

3. Dainty Jewellery: No matter how much you love those statement, chunky jewellery, summer is all about dainty pieces. Delicate necklaces, elegant cuff and simple rings are just the perfect accessory for this hot weather.

4. Summer Dress: Maxi, mini or midi, printed or embellished, flared or A-line, summer dress is the prefect blend of comfy and trendy. They can easily be dressed-up or down depending on the time of the day, occasion and location.

5. Denim Shirt: Layer with a tee, use it as a wrap over a bikini or simply pair it with coloured jeans, the denim shirt can effortlessly be styled in a number of ways. No matter how you wish to style it, opt for soft denim or a chambray instead of classic thick denim.
6. Oversized Tote: Carry it to office, beach or to a date, oversized tote bags functions as a home away from home, where your day-to-day stuff can easily be stocked away.

7. Flat Sandals: Not only are they super comfortable, but they pair pretty well with all kinds of summer clothes and can easily be worn to most occasions.

8. Shorts: Whether you like Daisy Duke kind of shorts or the trendy skorts or prefer the high-waist, culottes style, shorts are ideal for surviving the hot, humid days. In case shorts are not your style, mini/midi skirts work just as well for this season.

9. Florals: This is a cliché, but no summer is complete without its share of blooming flower prints. The style may change; the designs may evolve, but floral will forever remain summer quintessential.

10. Sunglasses: Sunglasses are a year round staple. However, in summer they become an absolute must have. Along with protecting your eyes from the scorching sun, sunglasses also help you make a chic style statement.

Using all the pieces from the summer wardrobe essentials list, here are a few styling ideas.

#GoRouge With L'Oréal Paris Pure Reds

It is a truth universally acknowledged that red lipstick is the ultimate picker-upper.
When it comes to makeup, nothing beats the power of red lips. A rouge pout can elevate your outfit, up your glam quotient, and make a statement all in one swipe!
If there is something I love as much as Mindy Kaling, pop culture and chocolates, it is, red lipstick.
It was nothing short of euphoric joy when L'Oréal Paris launched the Color Riche Pure Reds Collection.
The range includes 7 exquisite shades belonging to the red colour palette and represented by L’Oréal Paris ambassadors.
Along with true red, this curated collection includes orange and purple/berry (red based secondary colours) pink and fuchsia (tint of red) and brick and maroon (shades of red).
The Pure Reds collection has beautifully incorporated different tints, tones and shades of red.
The vibrant red colour palette has been used in an interestingly innovative way to create 7 gorgeous colour variations to flatter every Indian skin tone.
Along with complementing all types of Indian skin tones, these shades are perfect for every social occasion and mood.

A collection this beautiful requires something creatively different. Instead of doing the run-of-the-mill swatches and product review, I decided to create looks inspired by the shades of Pure Reds collection.
[Information on the above pieces here]

I got to try out the entire Pure Reds collection at L'Oréal Paris Red Party. After first hand trying out these beautiful shades, I strongly recommend every lipstick lover and junkie to go and try them. You are bound to buy a few of them for sure.

One of the reasons why I avoided swatches in this post is, since the shades tend to look different on different skin tones as well as the final look of the colour depends entirely on an individual’s natural lip colour, pigmentation and texture, swatches would not do justice to this vibrant collection.

Along with trying out the shades, I also got my make-up and hair styled by the phenomenally talented, Ms. Namrata Soni.
To complement my skin tone, Ms. Soni decided to use Pure Scarleto. I instantly fell in love with this shade and since then it has become my signature shade of the season.

[Hair & Make-Up Expert: Namrata Soni Photographer: Rema Chaudhary]

Not only are the shades stunning, but the entire package is done in a very polished and sleek manner.
The lipsticks are smooth at application and have a rich creamy matte finish to it.
From first had experience I can say, the lipstick easily lasts a good 6-8 hours without drying the lips. Nor does it require any touch ups; even after eating and drinking. The lipsticks have amazing hydration because of which it does not flake at all. The beauty of the entire collection is, there is a red there for every Indian skin tone, personality and age group.

Ladies, you search for the perfect red lipstick ends here! Pure Reds range of lipsticks by L'Oréal Paris is a one-stop place to find the perfect shade of red.

Accessorize It Right: 5 Must Have Bags {Every Woman Should Own}

With Women’s Day a little over 2 weeks away, what better way to celebrate it than honour every woman’s loyal companion-The Bag.
Whether it is an oversized tote or canvas shopper or coin purse, no woman every leaves the house without a bag. An integral part of a woman’s fashion arsenal, the bag is not just an accessory; it is a necessity.

Wondering which bag/s is ‘your’ bag? Which bags you should invest in?
If you Google ‘Must Have Bags’, the world wide web will throw multiple articles enumerating the ‘must have bags every woman should own’ your way. While this is helpful, it is not necessarily the right list for you.

The main reason why I decided to create this post, is to help women decide what type of bags are best suited for their individual needs.
Instead of just stating the different kinds of bags a woman must own, this post highlight the USP and function of each type of bag and how each and every one of these bags are an added bonus to a woman’s wardrobe and life.

Featuring bags from one of my all time fave accessory brand, Accessorize's latest collection, here is Fashionopolis’ list of 5 must have bags every woman should own.

1. Everyday Bag
2. Handbag
3. Getaway Bag

4. Sling Bag

5. Statement Bag

Now that you know the different types of bags, which
are your 5 must have bags? Share your views with me in the comment section.

Most of the bags featured in this post are available at Accessorize India store nation wide. You can now buy Accessorize products exclusively online at Myntra.com

Guide To Festive Winter Fashion

For most of us, the month of December is what an international visiting facility is to Mumbai University.
Highly anticipated, everyone cannot stop talking about it and before you can start to relish the moment, everything is over!

Say hello to December- the month of birthdays, weddings and festive parties. And just when you thought that you are done with attending social event and parties another one comes knocking down your door.

As much as everyone loves a good paarttttyyyyy, dressing according to the party theme can be quite a task. The guessing game of “Am I Overdressed/Underdressed” reaches an all time high in this month. The one question on everyone’s mind is: “should I dress down or should I go all glam out?”

Keeping the current season and festive mood in mind there is no shortage of winter or festive wear. Most brand are offering their version of winter and festive fashion. Among the lot, French Connection's Autumn/ Winter 2013 collection stands out with its hearty mix of festive fashion and winter essentials.
While select few pieces are apt only for the winter season, the remaining ones can be worn year round.

Keeping the current season and latest trends in mind, here are a few festive fashion looks to whet your style buds.
S
tyled with French Connection's Autumn/ Winter 2013 collection there is something for every occasion.

Casual: For a trendy casual look, stick with the classic winter combination of plaid and leather. Plaid pants paired with simple tee, structured leather jackets and boots is the perfect combination for a comfy yet stylish casual look.
If the leather jacket is not Bombay type of winter friendly, trade it with a denim one. For a more festive look, wear the colours of the season to spread some Christmas cheer around.
[Plaid Pants, Leather Jacket, Tee and Tote Bag- French Connection; Boots-Pull & Bear; Necklace-Macys.com; Watch-Marc by Marc Jacobs]

Chic: The simple, almost boring sweatshirt has been given a major makeover and been replaced by the IT piece of Autumn/Winter 2013- embellished statement sweatshirt.
For a work wear friendly chic look, team up the embellished sweatshirt with a pencil skirt, shoulder bag and monochrome pumps.
Not only is the look ideal for work, it is also perfect for post work parties.
[Embellished Sweatshirt, Pencil Skirt, Sling Bag- French Connection; Pumps-Zara; Earrings- Dannijo]

Glam: December is incomplete without its share of festive bling. From Christmas to New Years Eve parties and from bachelorettes to birthdays, a sequin dress is ideal for an all glammed up look.
The trick to working a sequin dress is to balance the look out. Team the sequin dress with black/white/neutral clutch, matte finish metallic sandals and drop earrings. Complete this look with bright shade lipstick and you are good to go.
To make it a more cold climate friendly look, layer with a long coat and black/nude stockings to beat the winter chills.

5 Must Have Statement Accessories

Ladies, we have reached that time of the year where you either go crazy broke shopping for new outfits or drive yourself nuts repeating the same words over and over again: “I have nothing to wear!”
Times like these you have to stop, and follow the oldest styling cliché - when in doubt, ACCESSORIZE!
Trust me, nothing changes the look of an outfit quite like accessories. If you have mastered the art of accessorising you can confidently wear the same outfit again and again without any worries.
While one can never really have enough accessories; there are a few timeless statement pieces that every woman must have in her wardrobe. Along with being fashion must haves; these accessories pieces are also wise fashion investments.

5 Must Have Statement Accessories (ever woman should own).
1. Chic Cuff that can be paired with anything
2.Multi-colour Jewelled Necklace
3. Sparkly Drop Earrings
4. An Embellished Clutch that can work with multiple outfits
5. Cocktail Ring
From red carpet to street style, these 5 pieces have been making their appearance all over fashion town.
No more restricted to any one particular season or time frame, all of these pieces can easily be worn year long.

What really makes these 5 statement accessory pieces a must have, is, their versatility. Each piece can easily be worn to a number of occasions and events. The flexibility of these pieces makes it easy to pair then with Indian wear, Western wear or fusion wear. The best part is, unlike clothes, these pieces complement most body types and can be worn by women of different shapes and sizes.

When it comes to accessories, there is only one name that comes the mind: Accessorize.
No one has better baubles, jewels and statement accessories quite like Accessorize
With the current festive and wedding season in full swing, it is time to stock up on these 5 beauties.

[All the above products are from Accessorize India's Autumn-Winter 2013 collection]
1. Chic CUFF that can be paired with anything: Just like we have that one shade of lipstick or pair of shoes that matches with everything, cuff is one statement accessory that can be paired with literally anything.
You can easily add it to an arm party or wear it by itself, pair it with a LBD or a silk saree, flaunt it on a date or to a business meeting, cuff is one of those flexible pieces that works well with any look and style.

2. Multi-colour JEWELLED NECKLACE: Colourful statement necklace have been a part of Indian wardrobe since time immemorial. With the world of fashion finally catching-up with this fabulous trend, a multi-colour jewelled necklace is not just a must have, but a much needed statement accessory.
Depending on your personal aesthetics one can select a bright and bold neon piece or a subtle one in jewel or neutral tones. No matter what your personal preference is, there is a statement necklace with a woman’s name written on it.

3. Sparkly DROP EARRINGS: Somewhere between the studs and long chandeliers, one can find the very underrated drop earrings. The drop earrings are a great alternative from those who want earrings that are not very long nor too short. Plus, the length of the drop earrings gives it an air of classy while the sparkly stones add a hint of sexy.
The beauty of a drop earring is, it can easily be worn with the hair tied up or let loose, making it a chic and wise investment.

4. An EMBELLISHED CLUTCH that can work with multiple outfits: For those not too confident about pulling off or carrying a bling look, an embellished clutch is just what you need. Along with being compact and convenient, it lets you flaunt some bling without actually wearing it.
Invest in a metallic or neutral colour one that works with both, Indian and Western wear as well as can be styled with different looks and silhouettes.

5. Cocktail Ring: The cocktail ring is the ‘cherry on top’ version of accessories. No matter how complete a look is, add an eye catching cocktail ring and the look’s glam quotients goes up by several notches.
Even those who shy away from other statement accessories, are easily seduced by the allure of a cocktail ring.

Girl Meets Boy

“It is fatal to be a man or woman pure and simple; one must be woman-manly or man-womanly. ... Some marriage of opposites has to be consummated.”
Virginia Woolf, A Room of One's Own

I have always had a love-hate relationship with the androgyny trend. The feminist in me gets the significance of a neutral dressing code, but the woman (and feminist) in me is not ready to be covered up in clothes that does not distinguish me from members of the other gender.
While some women have been more than ready to ‘suit-up’ and embrace their masculine side, others, like me, are still struggling to find the right, as I like to call it, ‘Gender Mix’ balance.
For me, it is more about mixing genders rather that completely eclipsing one gender all together.
After much experimentation, I have finally figured out a way to incorporate the right masculine pieces without compromising on my personal style. My take on the androgyny trend is, to either layer with or accessorise with or trade a regular piece with a well-constructed men’s wear piece.

One brand that I think would be ideal to experiment a gender mix look with, is Calvin Klein Jeans.
I recently had a chance to go through their Autumn/ Winter 2013 collection and instantly found pieces in the men’s wear section I would love to add to my wardrobe.
From masterful tailoring to clean and simple pattern lines, the entire collection is a fine balance of everyday essentials and must have winter pieces.
While the women’s collection has trademark minimalistic dresses, classic jeans and tops, the men’s wear range offers a wide array of shirts, structured cardigans and lightweight sweater.

Keeping the current season and latest trends in mind, here are a few gender mix looks styled with the Calvin Klein Jeans
Autumn/ Winter 2013 collection.

 SMART CASUALS
[Jeans, Pink Tee and Messenger Bag- Calvin Klein Jeans Women's A/W 2013; Plaid Shirt- Calvin Klein Jeans Mens's A/W 2013; Watch-Michael Kors; Studded High-Top Sneakers- Forever 21; Wayfarer Sunglasses- Ray-Ban]

Pairing a plaid shirt with classic blue jeans and tee is one of the oldest looks in casual fashion history.
To make this look more fun and create a trendy gender mix look, swap your regular plaid shirt with a men’s plaid shirt. Thrown on pair of statement sunnies, boyfriend watch and high-top sneakers and you are ready for a weekend shopping trip or a lazy afternoon with the boyfriend.

CITY CHIC

[Printed Pants & Bag-Calvin Klein Jeans Women's A/W 2013; Lightweight Sweater-Calvin Klein Jeans Mens's A/W 2013; Buckle Booties-Forever 21; Necklace-Kelly Wearstler; Bracelet-Tory Burch; Lipgloss- Guerlain; Eye Pencil-Clarins]

Sweaters are currently having a major fashion moment. From runway to street style, they have made their presence felt in all possible domains of fashion.
While chunky knits may work in some places, in a city like Bombay, lightweight sweater is all one can manage to wear.
For a polished, city chic gender mix look, pair printed pants with a contrasting colour oversized men’s lightweight sweater. Throw on a pair of boots, structured tote and statement jewellery and you are all set for a business luncheon or client meeting.
Keep in mind: The sweater should be only one size big and not very large cause that will make you look bulky.
For a more contoured look you can add a skinny belt to the ensemble.

EASY GLAM
[Coloured Pant, Sequins Top and Bag-Calvin Klein Jeans Women's A/W 2013; Zip Cardigan-Calvin Klein Jeans Mens's A/W 2013; Glitter Loafers-Just Ballerinas; Gold Cuff- New Look; Lipstick-  Elizabeth Arden]

Women love to dress-up and flaunt their glam side. However, a glam look can be quite a task. Sometimes you just don’t have the energy for a look so demanding.
On days like these, swap your all-out glam look with an ‘easy glam’ look instead.
With the right glam elements even the simplest of looks can be spiced up.
For a night out with the girls or a romantic date, pair a self coloured sequin top with bright coloured pants. Layer the look with a men’s zip cardigan for a stylish gender mix ensemble.
Accessorise the look with your fave pair of glitter loafers, gold cuff and red-hot lipstick to add the right amount of glam to an otherwise regular outfit.

With just a few add-ons and swaps, you too can style an semi-androgynous
‘Gender Mix’ look.

What did you think of Calvin Klein Jeans Autumn/ Winter 2013 collection? And are you ready to try a ‘Gender Mix’ look? Share your views with me in the comment section.

Style It Thrice: Glitter Ballerina

“Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.” Marilyn Monroe

Once a friend jokingly said, “All that glitters has Amena written all over it!”
Even though she was joking we both knew that was not far from the truth. For the longest time ever, I have had a thing for all things glitter, baubles, bling and metallic. I love them in all shapes, sizes and styles.

As much as I love all things glitter, I know for a fact how very easy it is to make glitter go from eye catching to tacky and God forbid, trashy! This is one of those trends that can swing either way.
To make this trend work, you need to invest in a piece that is apt for your body type.
Since glitter has a statement making quality, make sure it is adorned on that part of your body that you consider an asset.
Since I am not blessed with a glitter flaunting kind of body, I decided to deck my feet out in all its bling glory.
I have always dabbled with glitter, however, this is the first time in my life I have invested in a full-fledged glitter piece.
For my first ever glitter piece I treated myself to these stunning colourful ballet flats from Catwalk.
I got this pair for- wait for it- just Rs. 600/-from Shoppers Stop in Hyderabad. The only think I shopped this sale season! (You can buy the exact same Catwalk glitter ballerina from Myntra.com and Jabong.com)
Other than being my first glitter piece, these ballerinas are my first pair of closed shoes in 12 years!
When I bought them I really did not think styling them would be a task, until someone asked me are these shoes a practical purchase? She further added, the fact that they are multi-colour glitter itself makes them unmatchable with many things.
Where a season mix and matcher like me saw truckload of styling potentials, for someone with an untrained eye these ballerinas could have looked like an outlandish purchase.

For this week’s ‘Style It Thrice’ segment I decided to feature what I like to call my version of the ‘Ruby Slippers’
Not only are the ballerinas comfortable, they can easily be styled with a number of different pieces for different occasion.
Keeping the latest trends as well classic styles in mind, here are few of my glitter ballerina styling options.
Working Girl: The first time I wore my glitter ballerina; it was during Lakmé Fashion Week. In fact, this entire outfit is inspired by my LFW Day 3 look.
For trendy work wear look pair the ballerina with simple cobalt blue blouse, classic black jeans, colourful necklace and oversized tote. The overall look is a blend of classic style with elements of colour pop.
For a more corporate look, trade the colourful necklace/bag with a subtle metallic/neutral one.
[DIANE VON FURSTENBERG  Blouse, MANGO Jeans, DAVID AUBREY Necklace, CALVIN KLEIN JEANS Tote, MARC by MARC JACOBS Watch, YVES SAINT LAURENT Blush]

Fashion Week: Fashion Week is that time of the year when fashion industry's best creations are seen on as well as off the runway.
To make a significant statement, style a monochrome print mix ensemble. Pair the glitter ballerina with a black and white printed halter top and printed full skirt. To up the chic quotient, polish the look off with nude pink blazer, black and gold hardware belt,  plum clutch and cuff bracelet.
[JANE NORMAN Top, JIL SANDER Skirt, ALEXANDER MCQUEEN Blazer, REBECCA MINKOFF Clutch, BALMAIN Belt, VINCE CAMUTO Earrings, OSCAR DE LA RENTA Cuff, BOBBI BROWN Lip Gloss]

Date Night: Bored of wearing the uniform LBD or LWD to your date nights? Spice up your look and mix and match the ballerina with a fluro green lace shift dress and black and white patterned minaudiére. Polish the look off with a cuff bracelet, bright lipstick and dangling stone earrings.
[TOPSHOP Dress, ZARA Minaudiére, KATE SPADE Earrings, BACCARAT Cuff Bracelet, NARS Eye Liner Pencil, L'OREAL Lipstick]

What I really like about this pair of glitter ballerina is, that they can easily be styled with Western, Indo-Western and Indian attire. Ideal for the upcoming festive season.

Once in a while it's fun to trade you regular shoes for a pair of glittery statement making ones. Don't you agree? Share your views with me in the comment section.

From A.M to P.M: White Peplum Top

The peplum trend is by no means a new trend. Ever since Christian Dior debuted the classic Dior peplum in 1947 this trend has been in and out of fashion. While the peplum trend dominated the late 40's, 50's and 80's, it has made a huge comeback in 2012 and from the looks of it going strong in 2013 as well.
Since this trend is having a major fashion moment, I decided to feature it in this week's 'From A.M to P.M' segment.
White Peplum Top
A.M: Blazer/Similar Here, Lace Skirt, Handbag, Shoe, Bracelet
P.M:
NecklaceSkirt, ShoeWallet, Ring
Cuff, Eyeshadow, Lipstick

The beauty of this chic white peplum top is that it can be dressed down for a day look/office wear as well as jazzed up for a night/party look.

The A.M. look is inspired by the classic combination of a peplum top and a pencil skirt. This look is perfect for women with an hourglass, apple or pear shape body structure. Eg. BeyonceScarlett JohanssonSofia Vergara. The basic design of the peplum is such that it clinches at the waist while the flare makes the hips and thigh appear smaller. Pairing a peplum top with a pencil skirt enhances the curves in the right places as well as make you look leaner.

The P.M. look is inspired by the peplum look of the 80's, where women used to pair their peplum tops with A-Line or pleated skirt. Pairing a peplum top with a A-Line or pleated skirt is well suited for women with a petite body structure. Eg. Jessica Alba, Mila Kunis, Blair Eadie. The peplum will help accentuate the midsection and the full/pleated skirt will create a illusion of curves.

Keep in mind: While the peplum look is flattering to most body types, people with a bulky midsection must avoid a peplum outfit.
Also, when choosing a peplum top/dress, make sure the length, the style and shape is flattering to your body type. The idea of wearing the peplum is to highlight the waist and cover the tummy and love handles. If that purpose is not being served, then you got the peplum trend all wrong.

Are you ready to try out the peplum trend? And how would you like to style the peplum piece? Share your view with me in the comment section.
